2.4-mile swim,
112-mile bike,
26.2-mile run

I started competing in triathlons twenty years ago, but I had not entered any in the last seven or so years. I take that back. I entered one spring triathlon in 2005 under a fake name so no one would see how poorly I did it. I have never attempted a half-ironman or full-length ironman. I have run a half dozen marathons and ridden many century rides, but nothing really to prepare myself for this kind of an event.  Ironman Hawaii has a lottery system that receieves around 4000 applicants each year, and they draw 100 folks, I think. I have entered that lottery ($40 per year?) 6 or 7 times over the years, and in April of 2006 I was selected.

How I found out I was going to Hawaii:
Initial KQ2 interview

I was waiting for Ashton Kutcher to jump out & tell me I had been Punk'd. After it actually aired on the news that night, I allowed myself to believe it. So then, starting from a pretty negligible base, I started training.

Follow-up interview, taped 12 hours before we left, aired a couple days before the race
Second KQ2 interview
